Moss Receives OOP Waiver

What’s OOP? Operations Over People, which are allowed but strictly regulated under Part 107’s updated rules. There are Category 1, 2, 3, and 4 aircraft with specific guidance about their certification and kinetic energy requirements, among other things. But what if you don’t have one of those aircraft? You can do what Vic Moss did and go the waiver route.

At the CSU Colorado Drone Airshow on October 6-7, 2023 we had the opportunity to witness Vic flying his aircraft under that waiver.

If you want to read the waiver, have a look at this link: https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/107W-2023-01413_Victor_Moss_CoW.pdf. It provides all of the operational requirements for the waiver with the safety mitigations.

Our December 2, 2023 regular meeting will feature Vic and a discussion of Operations over People and Operations over Moving Vehicles. Speaking of the latter, there is some great information in Vic’s article on the DSPA website, including things you probably didn’t know or understand about these operations in Part 107. Have a look at https://dspalliance.org/oop-oomv/.
